About Ustad Dildar Hussain
Since 2003, I have studied with the Qawwali Masters, including my mentor and teacher the “King of Tabla” Ustad Dildar Hussain Khan.
Ustad translates as an honorific title, acknowledging a proven legacy and mastery of Indian Classical music.
Ustad Dildar is a living legend of Sufi Qawwali Music, holding the flame for carrying the Sufi message worldwide.
Our last generation of Qawwals was led by the mystic master Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, passing in ‘97. Honored by the Guinness World Records book for the most recorded and released music in a lifetime, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan had his deep partnership with Ustad Dildar. This relationship between tabla and lead vocalist provided the legacy to reach the whole world.
The potency of such lineage holders brought my understanding of humanity to another level. Witnessing humility within these masters reminded me that all is possible. Encouraged to play tabla and sing as a beginner and outsider always goes to show the great humanity within Ustad and his legacy.
Remembering the times I practiced in the house of Khansab and knowing the walls could even hear me, saturated with Ustad’s Qawwali lifestyle. I would become famished privately in my room trying to figure out the teachings Ustad had given, then ever so slightly the ladies would come in and offer me chai or food to keep going. As I look back at the hospitality and encouragement, becoming an artist bloomed by the support of Ustad and his legacy.
Still composing today, Ustad as he would say “swims” in the music daily.

Studying with the living legends of this ancient tradition has changed my life for the better.
I have been and continue to be amazed by his holistic approach to music. I've witnessed so many students and the attention given by Ustad Ji, his skill level not limiting him to teach even the beginners. Encouraged by such a master, yet humility at the forefront of his teachings. As Ustad will always remind me there is no end, the mastery is in knowing there is always more to learn.
